ArtTalks

The ArtTalks initiative intertwines diverse art disciplines by integrating programming in art spaces and infusing gallery and studio visits into book discussions. Its overarching objective is to forge connections between emerging communities, literary arts, and other creative expressions like music, visual art, and dance. Through inclusive dialogues, the program aims to expand entryways for conversations and harmonize fresh perspectives reflective of the immigrant and historical composition of the Bronx's population.

In ArtTalks’ first iteration, LFP and The Bronx Museum hosted collaborative discussions on Mikki Kendall’s Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot. These discussions paralleled the Museum's exhibition, Darrel Ellis: Regeneration, which featured a diverse array of works by the late Darrel Ellis (1958-1992), a queer artist hailing from the Bronx. Both the book and the exhibit actively confront societal inequalities and the act of "othering," shedding light on the ongoing struggles faced by marginalized communities in their battles against patriarchy, racism, queerphobia, and identity issues rooted in the remnants of colonialism. The discussion of Hood Feminism was complemented by gallery tours and the dissemination of additional text on societal inequality.
